What is Google AI Overview (AIO)?
Google is reshaping its search results pages with AI Overviews. An AI-generated answer now appears in first position, above the other results. This is what people call AI Search, or GEO. How does this feature, available in most countries (but not yet in France), change the way you look for information? What does it mean for brand visibility online? Here is how it works.
AI Overviews: what are they?
AI Overviews definition
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that sit at the very top of Google search results. They combine the strongest information on the web to answer complex questions, and they include links if you want to go further. AI Overview (AIO) uses a RAG architecture to fuse live web sources and produce a synthesis that covers complex intents. First called Search Generative Experience (SGE), AIO launched in May 2024 and is now on by default in many countries, though not yet in France. AIO is also Google’s on-ramp into AI Mode.

What are AI Overviews for?
Google’s main strategic goal is to meet a growing demand for informational efficiency (less time spent searching) by serving a complete, immediately visible answer, often without a click to an external site.
Google says AI stimulates new queries (longer and more complex). Through the links shown inside AI Overview answers, that would be an opportunity for brands to grow clicks to their sites. That claim is contested today. A Pew Research Center study finds, for example, that only 8% of searches with an AI Overview generate a click to a traditional website, versus 15% of searches without AIO.
Beyond the official line about efficiency, Google is first trying to keep users on its platform as AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Perplexity rise. By serving answers directly, it reduces the chance that users move to those conversational alternatives.
Rollout and availability
The AI Overviews rollout moved very fast. In May 2025, Google announced the expansion of this feature to more than 200 countries and territories, and to more than 40 languages (it is not yet available in France). Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, said in July 2025 that AI Overview was showing each month to more than 2 billion people.
Which queries trigger AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are still evolving and do not trigger on every query. Studies and analysis windows still show a lot of change and instability.

AI Overviews often appear for long, mainly informational queries. According to a seoClarity study, more than 96% of AI Overviews answer informational intents, while they appear in only 1.2% of transactional searches. That figure is likely to change.

How often AIO appears by topic keeps shifting. For example, between January and March 2025: Science (+22.27%), Health (+20.33%), People and Society (+18.83%), and Law and Government (+15.18%) were the sectors with the strongest growth in AI Overview share (Semrush study).

Google is cautious about triggering AIO on YMYL (Your Money Your Life) topics. AIO is often shorter or missing on health and finance subjects, to avoid dangerous hallucinations.
AI Overviews VS AI Mode
Google has also shipped AI Mode. AI Overview and AI Mode are not the same thing. AI Overview is a one-off answer that appears in Google’s traditional search engine. AI Mode is a different interface where the whole search experience is driven by AI. AI Mode works closer to what LLMs offer, such as ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Google is not alone in the generative-answer market. Other players offer similar products that change the search experience.

How do AI Overviews work?
SGE (Search Generative Experience), launched in 2023, was renamed “AI Overview” on 14 May 2024, then rolled out widely in 2025.
Use of the Gemini model
Google’s AI Overviews run on a specialized, customized version of the Gemini models. This custom model is built for multi-step reasoning, so it can handle complex queries, and it works together with Google’s classic search systems. Thanks to its multimodal capabilities, Gemini can analyze text, images (via Google Lens), and voice queries, which makes the search experience more advanced and more intuitive.
RAG mechanism (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)
The system uses a RAG architecture to ground generative answers in real, recent sources.
RAG combines two complementary approaches: retrieving information from Google’s index, and generating text with the language model. That method produces answers that are more accurate and more up to date.
The process runs in several steps:

The main advantage of this architecture is that it reduces hallucinations by leaning on verifiable web content. RAG therefore combines the creative power of AI with the reliability of real sources.

Text Ads and Shopping Ads have been eligible since May 2025 to appear inside AIO in the United States, and they are expanding to other English-speaking countries. Shopping ads perform especially well because they take the user from AI advice to an immediate purchase. Only campaigns using Broad Match targeting can be eligible to appear in AI answers.
Faced with falling organic traffic (“zero-click”), advertising inside AIO lets Google protect its revenue. For the advertiser, it is a chance to be present at the exact moment the AI recommends a solution.
AIO: what impact for brands?
Impact of AI Overviews on SEO and visibility
On mobile, AI Overviews take up to 48% of the screen, which sharply reduces the visibility of organic results. To date, Google does not publish transparent data on the impact on website traffic and CTR, even though it sounds very reassuring.
Beyond those drops, AI Overviews force a deeper reread of the value of organic traffic. If raw visit volume is often threatened by the “zero-click” phenomenon, the quality of engagement enters a new strategic dimension. It is no longer only about capturing attention. It is about validating an intent.

Can I refuse to appear in AI Overviews?
Google does not currently offer a way to exclude your content from AI Overviews. Classic robots.txt directives do not apply to this feature. Only a complete indexing block would stop your content from being used.
